The Employee State Insurance (ESI) Act defines an establishment as any organized entity, irrespective of its physical location, that employs men or women. This encompasses retail outlets and commercial shops, which are required to register under the ESI scheme if they employ 10 workers or 20 in specific states. Eligibility extends to employees earning up to Rs. 21,000 per month, or Rs. 25,000 for individuals with disabilities.

Here’s a simplified procedure for ESIC registration:

  • Fill out and submit the employer’s registration Form-1 online.
  • Visit the ESIC portal and login.
  • Access the PDF form available on the portal.
  • Fill out the form with accurate information and submit it on the ESIC website.
  • Upon verification, you’ll receive a unique 17-digit registration number for your organization.
  • Once you have the registration number, your ESI filing is complete.
  • Employees registered under the ESI scheme will receive an ESI card, provided you submit their photos and family details.
  • After providing all necessary details, proceed to the ‘Payment of Advance Contribution Page’.
  • Click on the ‘Pay Initial Contribution Link’ to make advance payment for six months.
  • Submit the payment and note down the challan number provided.
  • Registration is permanent, but remember to inform the ESIC in case of any additions to your employee roster.
